Greece’s future on a knife-edge: A race with global consequences

05/05/2023

As Greece approaches a pivotal and tightly contested election, the international community watches with bated breath. The stakes have never been higher, as the progress achieved under the New Democracy government faces potential derailment, with the far-left Syriza party seeking a return to power. In this neck-and-neck race between New Democracy and Syriza, the outcome of the election could send ripples across the global stage, making it crucial for Greece to choose a path towards progress rather than a return to economic turmoil.

The New Democracy government has been diligent in guiding Greece towards stability and growth. They have addressed the housing crisis, raised the minimum wage to improve the lives of hard-working Greeks, and secured an impressive €21 billion in EU funds from Brussels.

This shows the impact moderate, centre-right politics can have. New Democracy is a party that understands why we need growth, why we need trade, why we need to work hard to attract and sustain inward investment. Not because these things are innately good but because they deliver progress and prosperity for people and enable a strong state to intervene to support families and protect the vulnerable. We don’t believe in a vibrant, market economy instead of believing in social justice, we know that social justice requires a vibrant, market economy.

However, the spectre of Syriza looms large, as the far-left party is making a strong bid to return to power. Responsible for Greece’s near-collapse just a few years ago, Syriza’s return to government would send the nation spiralling back into economic despair, posing risks not only for Greece but for the international community as well. With the election too close to call, the choice between progress under New Democracy or regression under Syriza could not be more critical.

Centre-right governments around the world have demonstrated the importance of making tough choices to maintain stability and growth in their respective countries.

Centre-right governments around the world have demonstrated the importance of making tough choices to maintain stability and growth in their respective countries. Greece’s New Democracy government has followed suit, proving that the nation can thrive under responsible leadership. The alternative – allowing Syriza to regain control – would set Greece on a path of destruction.

As the election approaches, Greece must choose a government that can navigate the post-COVID world and continue its trajectory towards prosperity. The New Democracy government has demonstrated its commitment to progress, and it is vital that Greece does not reverse its course.

As the world looks on, we can only hope that Greece makes the right decision in this closely fought election. Greece, and the world, have much to lose if Syriza returns to power and triggers another economic crisis. Greece must continue to move forward, leaving the far-left Syriza party in the past where they belong. The choice is clear, and the stakes couldn’t be higher: progress over catastrophe.
